A Wiz

After our long trip we all kind of fell off the face of the earth that weekend we got home. Everyone slept in, everyday. And we were hard-pressed to get on our feet and do much walking after we had walked 3 different towns the past week. I know, I know, we're in London.. why WOULDN'T we walk around. That was a week ago now though.. The week of the 21st was the first day of our Art Tours class, which goes for a few weeks and basically all we do is look at slides in class, then after class we go to really cool museums. The first day of class I actually learned something.. we have some expensive sculptures in Fresno. That spider looking one out side the Convention center (isn't really a spider) is by Alexander Calder titled Bucephalus and we have a Renoir sculpture in Fulton Mall, The Washer Woman. Go check em out if you want to see some expensive art.

Then on Wednesday or so, we went to the British Museum. I for sure need to go back, there are a few exhibits I didn't even get to, and some others I wish I spent more time in. The first big exhibit you hit when you walk in is Egypt.. and some Mesopotamia too. But it's huge, and easy to get lost in. I don't think I ventured very far out of it except I found myself in the collection of sketches and drawings. I came out, turned the corner and came upon a sign that said Japan.. I really should get a map of this place next time. Well, I didn't go into Japan I went home instead. Which is why I say I need to go back. It's free and next door to my school, so I technically could live there.

There were a lot of these. (it's a mummy)

A mummified cat.

The fame, Rosetta Stone.

Some Egyptian guys.

A massive scarab.

Aphrodite yo. Kinda blurry tho.

Then on Friday morning we all piled onto the coach and went to Windsor Castle. THE Windsor Castle, the Royal residence.. not the Windsor Castle on our corner.. our favorite little pub. Easy to confuse though.
Well this place was beaUtiful. When I got inside and started touring the royal apartments.. all the Halls and Chambers and China and furniture and paintings and sculptures it was breathtaking. Huge ceilings with beautiful fabric hanging on the walls adorned with paintings the size of my bedroom. I've seen it all before, on TV and it looks fabulous on the screen still awe-inspiring. But when I turned the corner into Waterloo Chamber I seriously had to take a few steps back and just stand and stare... and close my mouth. Unfortunately though for you (and me) we couldn't take pictures.. It's all in my head. But I did take pictures of the castle from the outside. And we saw another changing of the guard.. there was a band and music just like the other one. But this time (it's smaller and there are less people) we got to hear them being yelled at, and actually change

I hear the weather where you guys are (well some of you at least) has been pretty dark, and wet. We've had so many nice days.. it hasn't been horribly cold (I came prepared both mentally and physically for a lot colder) I've been going some days in just a long sleeve shirt, and maybe a scarf. And the rain has been minimal, I think like 3 or 4 days of real rain since we've been here, and even at that it's never been all day. I know it could get cold real quick, and that we still have a bit more of winter yet.. so for now I'm taking each sunny day as a blessing.

wooo!

I've got pictures and stories to put up.. but that takes time..
They're coming soon though. I promise.
Exciting things first.. the first weekend trip is booked!!
We're going to Edinburgh, Scotland.
Bethany, Brian, Josh and I.
wooo!

FYI

I'm not holding out on y'all.. But I haven't really done anything since we got home from our trip. Just some reading, and writing play reviews and grocery shopping and church and school and journaling, and emailing (those lucky ones who actually email me!) but nothing really blog worthy. I'll try and do something cool, and take pictures to aid your addiction. I'm going to the Transport Museum on Thursday so I'm sure that will result in something.. and then our trip to Oxford is soon(ish) I think.

Stratford, Warwick, Bath and Stonehenge

So we went to Stratford-upon-Avon (for two nights.. the first night we saw Noughts and Crosses, based on romeo and juliet and the second night we saw Henry V)

Then of course we had to see

This is Shakespeare's Birthplace

This is where the house he built used to be.. The place next door is Hall's Croft.

All sorts of cool sculptures in the gardens.. Brutus.

Then we went to Warwick Castle.. (the tube stop on the corner near our flats is warwick station)

it's not a castle unless it has a trebuchet

we had to go down to the trebuchet.. and found some pretty views.

Josh and I

Then we went to Anne Hathaway's house and Mary Arden's Farm.. this is the farm

And I was a falconer for a day.. learned some tricks to try with Argento.

We left Stratford Wednesday morning (after my full english breakfast) for Bath.

On our way to Bath we stopped in this cotswold village and I found this little path..

that led me to a cemetery.. the only tombstone I could make out was dated 1644

Then we got to Bath

And walked to Bath Abbey..

And next door to the Abbey we went to the..

Then the next morning we went to stonehenge before heading back home

Great trip! Loads of fun.. some things struck my fancy a little more than others. But it was all amazing. I think I took 200+ pictures.. and originally had 30 to post on here. Obviously they went through a finer screening process before they got to you. I decided it was too much work. Cause you know, I do actually have school work. I need to write my play reviews, and finish my reading. Oi, school. Hope everyone is doing well, feel free to send emails. I know you all have it.

procrastination to the Nth degree

So it's only been a day or two. And I'm already back.. fueling your obsession with this thing. Let me think, what's the date today.. Sunday. Well, actually for me it's the wee hours of Monday. But for 'yall it's still Sunday so I'll leave it at that.

And I think I left off on Friday... Friday we went with our school group (as a required field trip) to the Tower of London. We had seen the outside our second day here, but we got to go inside on Friday. And just as everything so far in London, it was awesome. We didn't have a guided tour, just admission to get in and wander ourselves. I got stranded somehow, and wound up wandering the place by myself and it was actually quite nice. I got to see the Crown Jewels (another thing you can't take pictures of)... a 530 carat diamond! The place is awesome, so many things to see and they have this really cool armory museum (that don't worry dad I've got plenty of pictures of) but for the sake of everyone else, I won't put them up here.. I'll try and stick with the universal picturesque shots..

inside the first gate.. this is what you see

in all of the towers where they imprisoned the people they were religiously persecuting there were tons of these carvings, as last minute ditch efforts. some of them were really elaborate like this globe..

others were strictly just their names, or a few sentences about their fight a lot of Jesuit symbols..

walking along one of the outer walls

pretty self explanitory

Then as we were leaving the Tower of London.. I ran into, oh I already told you.. here's the picture.

After all the excitement we came back to the flat.. all but one of my roommates went down to the pub on the corner.. I stayed in, not doing anything in particular. I had the thought of maybe walking the 50m to meet up with them in a bit but then I started watching their version of a show like CSI or something similar.. and wow, they are much more graphic over here. I got scared! My roommate Bethany and I were watching it and we had to put our chain lock on our door! There was no way I was going out there at night by myself. Such girls.

Then saturday, I woke up and was the first one in my flat to get dressed.. and it was around 11. I got dressed and my friend Josh and I hopped on the tube to Portobello St. Market. A huge antique, open air market. I didn't take any pictures, too many people. I want to go one weekend with nothing but my camera, so that I can have my hands up snapping pictures without worrying about my pockets. So those will come later.. We were at the market until about 3 or 4, then we came home and chillaxed. And then Saturday night I went down with my roommates to the pub.. We started talking to this group of guys two Englishmen, and Italian and Bulgarian.. who was my favorite. Because his name was Boris. :)

And now today. Today was jam packed, until this evening around 8.. I don't think I was in the flat (awake) for more than two hours maybe. This morning Josh, Bethany and I tried a different church, St. Mary's. It's about 4 minutes away on the tube.. or a 15 min walk. It's an Anglican church, Josh's cousin had told him about it so we decided to try it. And we loved it!! We were talking about it all day. Great atmosphere, good people.. lots of fun. But we started talking to the guy who leads the church after the service and he told us that the students usually come to the 5 or 7 service.. so we're excited for next week to hit up the service with more people our age. This morning service (at 11) was full FULL of young families. That's all. Just lots of young couples and kids. The kids go away of course.. but they were every where for the first 15 minutes or so. Then after church we came home got re-set for about half an hour then two of my girl roommates Violeta and Bethany and I headed back to the tube to hit up Oxford St. to do some shopping. No serious damage.. because we spend all of our time in Primark. The cheapest store to ever grace this earth. Then after wandering around Oxford st for an hour or two we headed to Trafalgar Sq. to witness the Russian Winter festival.. which is actually their New Year Celebration.. I think. There were stages with performers (singers singing in russian, i'm assuming russian rock stars maybe)There were thousands upon thousands of people. All of them speaking russian. I didn't understand a word that was spoken the whole few hours I was there people were coming up and handing us fliers for things and talking to us in russian.. there were so many people there and it was so loud usually it resulted in us staring at the person in disbelief until they walked away. We didn't understand anyone except for the lady yelling "next" when i was in line for food. Which I kind of just pointed to something on the sign.. cause everything was in russian. We asked someone how to say what i ordered and it comes out to chebureki. We tried it (bethany and I) and fell in love. it was delicious. amazing. a little piece of heaven. we had to come home and google it to find out what it was we were eating.. turns out it's lamb. ooh man. wrapped up this this little pita looking pocket of dough, fried to goodness. I need to find these in fresno, clovis, or any surrounding area. DELICIOUS.

Here's a little video right after the countdown (which was at like 6pm) of music and dancing. The little things flying towards the camera are confetti like things that were being spewed everywhere. and keep in mind that this is probably only 45 degrees of the 360 in which crowds of people like this were about. I told you, lots of people.

But, sadly now I must tell you that I will be gone, until Thursday. We are going on a field trip. A long one... and I'm not going to tell you where. You'll just have to wait. And no, it's not cause I don't know where we're going. It's a power thing.. I like building the suspense.

up to speed

So it's been almost a week and I haven't posted. Thank your for not yet resorting to hate mail. Going this long between posts gets me a little discombobulated. Well, let me just re-cap my week (for your benefit, and mine)

Monday- Well, Monday was my first day of Uni(versity). The first day wasn't too bad. On Mondays and Wednesdays I go to school from 10-12. My humanities class and my theater class are on these days. But, since it all those classes consist of are field trips and theatre visits, on the first day we were just given lists of places we are going and plays we are going to see. The first of both begin Monday. We will be in Stratford Upon Avon for three days two nights (I think) and we will be seeing a play each night. Henry V and Noughts and Crosses, which is based on Romeo and Juliet. Though I was excited to hear all the things we're going to see, what got me even more excited was what I saw on our way to school. One of our teachers didn't tell us the best tube stop to get off at, she told us one stop too soon.. so it required a bit more walking to school that day. BUT on our way to school, we passed 4 different ballet shoppes. Full of beautiful ballet clothes, and warm ups, and I can't wait until I go back to stare at all the beauty and maybe rub some elbows and get some advice on places to get some good classes in. Then Monday night, at 6:30 a few friends of mine and myself walked down to the church on the corner St. Saviour to attend the advertised Monday night service (we had a field trip Sunday morning so we couldn't attend then) We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. As the four of us walked into the church and took a quick look around the congregation of two women both over the age of 70 we knew we were in for a treat. The first few words of the scripture reading (hilariously) flooded my mind with the scene from Princess Bride. I quickly righted my mind though and after I did it was a short, 30 minute service a little bit of scripture, communion and a few prayers. It was nice, I think we want to find somewhere else to attend regularly but that service is offered MWF at 6:30 so it's a good place for some quiet scripture and reflection.

wow.. are you sure you want me to keep going until Friday?? I'll give the readers digest version from here on out..

Tuesday - Today was the second day of Uni. My history classes, Tuesday and Thursday I go to school from 9-12. And our school is conveniently located next door to the British Museum which houses the Rosetta Stone among many other things. And best of all, it's free. So you can bet I'll have plenty of pictures and stories about that place.
**this wasn't intentionally this readers digest short, I even looked into my journal for inspiration but that entry is short too.

Wednesday - Today after school we went back over to Westminster Abbey. This time we went inside. Magnificent. No pictures allowed inside though. Lots of tombs, and memorials. Kings and Queens, Charles Darwin, Lewis Carroll. It's still a working church, so every hour everyone has to stop, and they say a prayer at one of the alters. I made a point to wait inside not to miss it. I lit a candle for Gramps, and we're gonna try and go one Sunday for service.

From inside a courtyard. Where we were allowed to take pictures.

Big Ben and the Eye.

Thursday - After school I just came home and did some paperwork. I did a bit of reading (we've got a lot of it) figured some stuff out on the computer, went through photos took a shower.. nothing exciting. Later we walked to our nearest Barclays, the bank through Bank of America, to take out some cash then stopped by the grocery store on our way home. We made burgers and salad for dinner and watched our favorite game show "Countdown" it's pretty awesome. They also have a lot of US shows here, The Simpsons, Will and Grace and some Pussycat Dolls reality show. We usually stick to countdown, their version of deal or no deal and whatever random old movie is on. They're usually on in the background when we're cooking or emailing.

And now we have caught up with the present. Today we went into the Tower of London, at first I was kind of iffy about this trip. But I thought it was wonderful! I've got tons of pictures that I need to go through before I put any up here. And then, even better than the Tower (I always find something spectacular on the way to these places) I ran into Graham Norton. Yes.. Graham Norton. And yes, I have a picture to prove it. And yes, it's ok to be jealous. And if by some off chance you don't know who he is... why are you reading my blog?? :)

So as you could guess, there will be a post later (hopefully not 4 days later) about the tower of london, complete with pictures!

By Popular Demand

Grandma Janet was the only person to call me on this.. I told you I'd give you a picture of my bedroom even though it's disgustingly small, and I only am in my room when I'm getting ready for bed, in bed and getting out of bed. It's a good thing my roommates and I all get along because when we are in the flat, we hang out in the living room. But we try not to hang out in the flat very often. Anyways.. so I promised you all a picture of the room once we had gotten the suitcases out of the way (so that you don't notice that my suitcase is bigger than my bed) and I haven't put one up yet.. soooo here they are. And for your patience, I threw one of the bathroom in there.

From the door...

My bed.. I lucked out.. no bunk beds for me.

Three little dressers and some closet space.

The toilet.

For your viewing pleasure

I have a lot of stories, and adventures to tell but I don't have that many more winks left in me. Busy, busy last couple of days. And school starts tomorrow!.. I kind of forgot I have to go to school here. That's gonna put a damper on things for sure ;)
I'll go on more adventures and gather more stories and share them all. But for now you just get to see some of my pictures.
